A spirit of the old African homestead

Octagon Lodge is a small and private lodge between the breathtaking Ngorongoro Crater and majestic Lake Manyara. In harmony with the indigenous environment and architecture, it brings natural elements and a homely feel together.

Our friendly Tanzanian staff offer a personal service in an intimate setting, for an authentic and unforgettable holiday in Tanzania.

Our story

In 2012 the lodge was taken over by a family who refurbished it for guests who value privacy and comfort. Since then it has kept improving, and at the heart of the gardens sits our Irish Bar. We cook with our own organic, home-grown vegetables and draw spring water from our private borehole.

Guest words

A little oasis in the bustle of the town

Friendly and attentive service, excellent rooms, lovely gardens; we would have been happy to stay longer.

Steve R.

Very close to Karatu, yet you felt like you were far from any city. The staff took good care of us and the meals were delicious. Maybe the best on our entire trip.

Diane C.

This lodge was worth every penny! Beautiful little individual lodges tucked away from the hustle of Karatu, with beautiful greenery everywhere. Dinner and breakfast were spot on.

What to do, what to see

The Northern Circuit parks are all within driving distance. Each has its own attractions, so ask us and we’ll help you plan your safari.

  1. Ngorongoro Crater

The world’s largest intact volcanic caldera, and one of the best places to see the Big Five. The gate is twenty minutes away.

  2. Lake Manyara National Park

One of Tanzania’s smallest parks and one of its most scenic; Hemingway called it the loveliest he had seen in Africa.

  3. Tarangire & the Serengeti

Both within driving distance, making Octagon an ideal base for the whole Northern Circuit.

  4. Endoro Waterfall & Elephant Caves

A guided hike to the waterfall and the caves where elephants have dug for mineral-rich soil for over 150 years.

  5. Olduvai Gorge

The Cradle of Mankind, home to Homo habilis some 1.9 million years ago.

  6. Karatu coffee estates

Volcanic soil and highland altitude make Karatu ideal coffee country. Visit the plantations nearby.

  7. Karatu biking tour

Leave the vehicle behind, ride through the Ngorongoro highlands and meet local people.

  8. Manyara Treetop Walkway

A sky-high walk through the forest canopy of Lake Manyara.

  9. Tanzip Zipline

At the foot of the Rift Valley wall near Mto wa Mbu, with views over lakes and the Maasai steppe.
